April SASSA Grant Increase: Everything You Need to Know

April 2025: A Huge SASSA Grant Increase is a month that will have a significant impact on the beneficiaries of South African Social Security Agency. Seven different grants types will increase this month.

The increases are set to take effect in the first week after Easter and will affect about 30 million South Africans. This move will cost the government about R300 billion, which was collected by 7.4 million tax payers. SASSAshould still investigate the number of people who are eligible to receive these grants as grant fraud continues to increase.

Which SASSA grants have been increased?

The following grant amounts have increased as a result of the changes:

Increased Old Age Grant from R2,185 up to R2,315
War Veterans Grant increased to R2,335 from R2,205
Disability Grant increased to R2,315 from R2,185
Increased Parenting Grant from R1,180 up to R1,250
Care Dependency grant – reduced from R2,185 R2,135
Increased Child Support Grant from R530 up to R560
Increased Support Grant from R530 R560

The SASSA SRD grant is likely to remain the same at R370 per monthly and will not be increased until March 2026 at least.

What grants are available and when?

The grant payments will be made at fixed times, along with the increase. The new schedule of payment is:

On April 3, 2025, the first increase in old-age allowance will be paid out.
Disability grant is only payable on April 4, 2025.
The new sassa payment dates schedule for the 5th April 2025 will affect all other grant programs such as war veterans grants, parental grants, care dependency grants, child support and support payments, etc.

The SASSA Gold Card is no more

Recent instructions were sent to SASSA recipients to switch from the old Postbank gold card to a new Postbank black one. Despite the deadline, around 3 million SASSA beneficiaries still haven’t received their black cards.

SASSA has made it very clear to Postbank that recipients who don’t have a “black card” can still get their grant by going to SA Post Offices or certain retail outlets such as Spar, Shoprite Checkers Pick n Pay Boxer Usave.

What is the best way to apply for a grant in spite of not having a new card black?

If a recipient hasn’t yet been issued with the black card they may still receive their grant.

Cash from Post Office: Beneficiaries may receive cash grants by visiting any SA Post Office Branch with their ID cards.
You can get the grant from selected retailers: Some major retailers have been authorized by the government to allow beneficiaries to pick up their grant even without the card.

The government will continue to distribute black cards even though the gold card is no longer available after March 20, 2025.

Beneficiaries should receive their cards black as quickly as possible. After receiving the black card they will be able to withdraw funds from ATMs or retail outlets in normal fashion.

The increase of the SASSA grant to April 2025 is a relief for millions South Africans. The slow distribution of black cards is frustrating for many recipients.
